What is an "RSS feed"?
RSS feeds (aka "site syndication" or "news feeds") are a way to distribute website content in aggregrate form. Blogs, news sites, video websites, and podcasts all use them to syndicate their information to the dozens of feed reader programs. This allows a person to subscribe to all of the blogs, podcasts, video feeds, and online newspapers they normally read/listen to in one place. This saves time hopping from website to website to check for new content, especially when sites are updated at varying rates.
There are many free web-based RSS feed readers including Bloglines, Pluck, and Newsgator. Yahoo, Google, and AOL also offer readers as part of their service options while many popular browsers like Firefox include syndication right in the interface. Instead of having to check in with every site, one just has to log into her chosen news reader and all of the latest entries are compiled there. Subscriptions can be for either summaries of new content (with links leading to full content on the actual website) or all of the content right in the reader.
