The local public transportation system may seem daunting at first but it really is quite easy to get a grasp of. The secret is just to start riding the combis (vans) and microbuses and you'll quickly figure out the routes. The main destinations of each bus is listed on the front window but you can always ask the driver and he will usually inform you of the best place to disembark. Fares are 5-8 pesos for pretty much anywhere in Zihua, throughout surrounding neighborhoods, and even to Ixtapa. The main bus stop is between the central Mercado and Elektra, on the corner of Benito Juarez and Morelos Boulevard but you can board a bus anywhere along its route.

There are three main taxi companies in Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa. They have (the same) standardized flat rates based on distance. You should confirm these rates before beginning your ride if you have any questions. There is a 50% late night fee added for rides after 10pm.

Within Zihuatanejo Centro, the rate is 18 pesos while a trip to Playa la Ropa is 30 pesos. Going to neighborhoods on the outskirts of Zihua will cost between 20 and 50 pesos.
Within Ixtapa, rates range from 30 to 55 pesos.
Taking a taxi between Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa will cost between 50 and 100 pesos.
Trips to the airport cost 80-140 pesos from Zihuatanejo and 120-180 pesos from Ixtapa.
Rides to Barra de Potosi, Troncones, Playa Larga, etc will cost between 200 and 350 pesos and can sometimes be negotiated. You can also hire taxi drivers by the hour for siteseeing excursions. Many return visitors have a favorite driver who they call for special trips and for guided tours. If you find a driver you like, feel free to ask him for his contact information.
